Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Advent
Mary set out in those days and traveled to the
hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of
Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the
infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried
out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is
the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my
Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my
ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that
what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
- Luke
1: 39-45
Today's gospel depicts a wonderful reunion
between two cousins and soon-to-be mothers: Mary and Elizabeth. Their reunion
conveys the message to us that we should always make time for our loved ones
and show them how important they are in our lives. There are numerous ways to
do so, whether virtually or in person. As the coming of Jesus Christ is nearing,
let us also prepare ourselves and be filled with the Holy Spirit. We must
continue strengthening our faith. This requires dedication and commitment and
can be done through prayers, attending Mass, and many other means.
May we all leap for joy just like the infant in
Elizabeth's womb. This act of joy or rejoicing serves as a reminder for us
about the best and most important gift we will receive this Christmas. It is
the presence of Jesus Christ. There may be items on our Christmas wish lists
that we desire. But let us not forget that the essence of Christmas is Jesus
Christ. In life, there may be a tendency to lose sight of the true meaning of
happiness. During these times, we should remind ourselves that there is
happiness in Jesus' existence.
We may not be able to physically see Him or
understand His plans for us. However, let us put our complete trust and faith
in Him. Cast away all doubts and trust in the Lord, who knows what is best for
us. In my home country, the Philippines, one would say, "Ipag pasa Diyos
mo yan." Simply put, leave everything in the Lord's hands. Let go and let
God. Let God take charge of this journey called life. As Padre Pio said,
"Pray, hope, and don't worry."
There is an abundance of blessings we can
realize from this gospel. The children in the womb represent new life and
blessings. Jesus is a blessing, and He has bestowed upon us many wonderful
things, like the gift of life, faith, good health, family, and friends. May we
pass on this chain of blessings and touch the hearts and lives of many other
people. Spread love, kindness, and warmth during this chilly season. Jesus is
almost here, and let us welcome Him soon with joy, gratitude, and peace.
