Tuesday of the First Week of Lent

Lent is a spiritual journey to seek God’s mercy, grace, and renewal of faith through repentance.

Truthful repentance comes with bountiful grace that sustains and fails to fade away like a New Year’s resolution.

In our observance of lent we mimic our Lord’s journey. As He was, so shall we also be tempted by the devil.

When Jesus was tempted, He was spiritually strong to overcome by these words:

“One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”

In examining this phrase, two things are glaring:

a. Bread:

- This entails that we examine ourselves physically and spiritually for what’s needed to sustain us during fasting.

b. Word of God:

- Its effect cannot be overstated since it will provide us the strength needed to see us through.

Acquiring what’s needed to survive lent, requires repenting believing and praying. Our frailty is the tendency to ramble repetitively in our prayers and Jesus taught us how to pray which reverberate around:

1. Praising, hallowing, and acknowledging God as creator.

2. Requesting sustenance for our survival.

3. Asking and practicing forgiveness.

4. Requesting grace from temptations and evils.

While “The Lord’s prayer” is easy to recite, it is difficult to practice in its entirety. To this end, we ask for God’s mercy and grace that will enable us to practice it.

We have one assurance THOUGH, the Lord will be with us for He said, “ask, and ye shall receive; seek, and ye shall find; knock; and it shall be opened”. Mt 7:7

Therefore, this Lenten period let us do that and His promise will be fulfilled in our lives and world.

This is further re-affirmed by today’s Reading I in Isaiah 55:10-11.
