Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Today's Readings

Janet Erskine Stuart was an English nun, educator and writer who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This prayer by her is one I have turned to in times of uncertainty to provide comfort. Although titled “Prayer for the New Year,” its plea is applicable to any journey or new beginning, especially one involving a healthy dose of fear of the unknown.

Lent is a journey. As these 40 days come and go, may we find solace in stillness and prayer and learn to mine treasures from our troubles, as Stuart says, in order that we may be prepared to embrace Easter full of joy and hope when it arrives in a few weeks.

Janet Erskine Stuart’s Prayer for the New Year
Loving God, unseen Companion of our life, give us faith and eager expectancy as we begin this fresh stage of our journey. Take from us all fear of the unknown and teach us to wrest treasures from darkness and difficulties. As the days come and go, may we find that each one is laden with happy opportunities and enriching experiences; and when this year reaches its completion, may our best hopes be more than ever fulfilled. Amen.
