Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The day for which we prepare ourselves during Advent, and when our joy and faith are strengthened with the life of a very special baby, is near. Two weeks from now, we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus. With great reason, Advent is about the coming of our Savior, and our attention and hearts should be all offered to Him as a precious gift. Even the three Wise Men offered baby Jesus special gifts. Still, we could not forget about someone as special as baby Jesus; His and our mother, the Virgin Mary.
Mary is such an important person to both Jesus’ birth and our faith. Therefore, today’s readings are also about her story. We are even celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe! Another wonderful story that depicts the love and strength we receive from our mother. Little is known or mentioned about Virgin Mary in the Bible; however, we still can recognize her character. I believe Mary is one of the most loving and bravest people. We all should imitate her more and today’s Gospel can be taken as evidence for why we all should learn from her, too.
Mary’s “yes” can be seen as a simple response to God. However, we should put ourselves in her shoes (as we say today), especially considering the times she was living where women were very limited to certain duties and roles. Her “yes” is an act of bravery that involves a great deal of responsibility, love, faith and trust in God’s will. She shows all of these qualities in the face of something that most might be afraid of doing or would prefer not todo. However, without hesitation, Mary said “yes” to the most beautiful act of love from God for us. Her trust in God was sufficient for her to be reassured that she was not going to be alone in her journey. One of my favorite Catholic artists has a song dedicated to the Virgin Mary and her “yes”. When I feel alone, I like to listen to this song to remember about Mary and my trust in God’s will. Let us pray that for this Advent we can become more like our mother the Virgin Mary. This way we could be stronger and prepared to receive baby Jesus in our hearts and lives.
