Tuesday of the First Week of Advent

Today's Readings

Every year, as the Advent season comes upon us, so does an air of kindness. Whether it is the weather getting colder, the warmth and heartiness of the season’s food, or the knowledge that joyful holidays are approaching, this time of year draws people closer together.

This year has been one of tumult, where at many turns it seems that far more energy is spent highlighting differences than embracing similarities. Dialogue and discourse have waned in favor of misunderstandings and conflict; where transparency should prevail, it has been opaque. But, as the wolf joins the lamb and the calf joins the lion, in Advent we are all compelled to join together – with a renewed focus to do no harm and bring no ruin.

Even the moniker bestowed upon today in the holiday shopping season – Giving Tuesday – is rooted in kindness, as we give of ourselves to better the lives of others. ‘Giving’ takes many forms; there are more options than giving a monetary donation or giving one’s time by performing acts of service. ‘Giving’ also means giving of our minds; pausing our thoughts for a few extra moments to consider another’s point of view, or giving the benefit of the doubt towards someone rather than indulging in gossip or conflict.

There is so much to give this holiday season; no matter what or how you choose to give in these coming days, of utmost importance is to give with intention, to leave love and kindness wherever you go.
