Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

“She was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.” This sentence seems like it could refer to any of the troubles going on in our world today, the war in Ukraine, the uncertainty of Covid, and that last minute paper or lecture that we need to prepare.  For Mary, she was troubled by a greeting from an angel; for us, we are troubled by many unanswered questions of when their will be peace, when we will be healthy, and when we might finish our schoolwork.  However, the answer that was given from the angel is the answer for all of us.  “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”  Of course there is more that the angel says to Mary and more information to ponder, but, for now, let us focus on this message “Do not be afraid.”  We are already halfway through Lent. For some of us, we might feel like we are staying on our course and are remembering those Ash Wednesday promises that were made.  For others, we might have eaten a piece of chocolate, lost our temper, or forgotten to say that extra prayer.  However, it is not too late!  God is always waiting for us, for that relationship to continue.  No need to give up!  No need to be troubled.  As we continue on our Lenten journey, let us continue to pray, fast, and give alms, and let us hold that message from the angel close to our hearts.  In our private and public prayer time, let us remember to not be afraid.
