Friday after Ash Wednesday
On this first Friday of Lent, a day when many will fast, or at least abstain from non-fish-meat, we learn a broader definition of fasting and a focus on living in the moment.
The fasting described in Reading I goes beyond a sacrifice of food or drink, it is action-based: release the oppressed, clothe the naked, feed the hungry. We fast to reflect on this time leading up to Easter, to analyze how we can be more like Jesus and his treatment of others. But why not also take action to help others – the intention is the same, but the results are twice as nice. Take time to serve; share your blessings.
In the Gospel, the disciples are yet to fast, enjoying the company of Jesus. When questioned, Jesus reminds those that their bridegroom will be taken away, and at that time, fasting will commence. The time to focus on that which they dread will come sooner than they wish; why rush into it?
Life is both difficult and full of joy. We must savor the happy times when we have them, and be grateful for what we have when perhaps things don’t seem so happy. But in the end, our lives are gifts. We must celebrate that which has been given to us, and in his name, do our best to bring joy to those who need it most.
