Thursday of the Second Week of Advent

| TODAY'S READINGS

As I reflect on today's First Reading, I’m reminded that even those things that seem impossible are possible with God’s help. In these verses from Isaiah, God gives us numerous examples of how our efforts to solve problems on our own fall far short of what He is able to do on our behalf. Who else could create water in the most unlikely of places for people who are parched or grow trees in the desert where they are not known to survive?

Each and every one of us struggle at some point with solving the problems of our everyday lives. Whether the struggles occur in our families, relationships, finances, academics, physical/mental health, parenting or careers, we think that we have to find all of the answers by ourselves. When that doesn’t happen, it can feel like a personal failure. This perspective can lead to frustration, stress and even depression. So, what can we do when this happens? As a social worker, I certainly recommend seeking out the services of professionals who are trained in your area of need.

Those of us who are people of faith also have an additional source of support. This season of Advent reminds us of the power of prayer and meditation. While there are limits to what we can do as human beings, there is no limit to what God can do when we turn our burdens over to Him and truly let go. I’ve experienced or witnessed such miracles many times in my own life. I still feel very blessed and extremely thankful for being restored to a place of equilibrium, peace and hopefulness after the sudden death of my beloved father almost eight years ago.

No matter how serious or overwhelming your current challenges may be, remember…GOD CAN CHANGE THINGS!
