“Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever.”

During this difficult Advent season of transition, isolation, suffering, and loss, it seems fitting to take comfort in the refrain of the responsorial psalm. Justice will flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever. As Dr. Martin Luther King noted, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Today’s Psalm reminds us to be patient during difficult times like these. The Psalm reminds us the “mountains shall yield peace for the people, and the hills justice.” Nature and simplicity provide the comfort and answers we spiritually seek in the psalm. God will defend the afflicted and save the children of the poor. As we prepare for Christ’s birth in a simple Bethlehem manger, today’s Psalm reminds us to take solace in God’s long arc of justice. Find peace around you in simple things and proclaim happiness and joy to ALL the tribes of the earth, not simply the ones we feel most comfortable with or choose to call our own. As the Alleluia reminds us, the wisdom of God guides creation with power and love and leads the way to knowledge. Let us all hope for justice and peace to come to us and guide us this season, as we celebrate the birth of Christ and the blessings and possibilities of new life coming out of dark, trying times.
